40. Harvesters’ jug. Why put a “straw” in a jug of water? Because you can drink only this way, or through the so-called “tit” on the handle. During the summer heat these kind of jugs were used to transport the water to the field-works. To keep the cold temperature longer, the jugs were dug into the soil up to their necks. If someone wanted to drink, they did not take it out, but bent down and drank with the help of a straw. They needed a very thin straw as there was a sieve built into the neck to keep insects and soil away.
