17. Cither. A string instrument of Asian origin, which became widespread in Hungary in the 19th century. The bottom of the hardwood carved instrument body is usually open, the top is made of softwood (e.g., pine). The metal strings run along the instrument body. According to their shape, we distinguish between columnar, small or puppy-headed and tubby zither. Carving is often seen at the ends of the heads (e.g. foal head). This cither was made by a certain László Baranyai in the 1930s. A family called Baranyai also lived in Tihany, who also dealt with horses, so presumably László Baranyai was also a member of their family.
